Circle of Influence

Written by

Coaching Thought:

'The world is perfect. It’s a mess. It has always been a mess. We are not going to change it. Our job is to straighten out our own lives'. – Joseph Campbell. What a great time to stop worrying about global events and take stock of our own backyards.

Coaching Ideas:

  • Can you do anything directly about global warming or a world pandemic? Probably not. Can you do something about recycling, re-using, reducing, or using resources differently? Can you adopt safe daily practices? Then do that.
  • Can you directly do anything about world economics? Probably not much. But can you do something about your own finances and budgets? Then do that.

Take your intensity, attention and energy off world-wide events and bring them back to your direct circle of influence, and focus on that. This is more empowering and reduces feelings of helplessness in the face of overwhelming events beyond our direct control.

The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them, or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them.

  • Letting Go

Whatever it is, if it doesn’t make you happy, walk away, give it away to someone else who wants it. Let it be their next dream; let it flee from you. Then you have room to grow, to allow magnificent things to fill the vacuum of those seemingly empty places. When you hold onto yesterday, when you hold onto dead and dying adventures, you have no room in your box for greatness. Unknown
