The truth is somewhere in between. Opportunities are all around us all the time. We see them or miss them, depending on what else is taking our attention at the time. Because of the millions of bits of information we are bombarded with constantly, our brains protect us and filter out the unneccessary, via the Reticular Activating System. This allows only the important things to come through to our attention. How does it know what's important? We tell it - with our thoughts, words and behaviours. So, to be open to a specific opportunity, we need to have told our brains it is important to us - through thinking about it, writing about it, researching it, ensuring we have the necessary skills and capabilities for it, staying alert and aware to it. We can also help ourselves by having strategic conversations with people of influence, to indicate our interest. That is being prepared to meet the opportunity when it arises.
Coaching Questions:
- What opportunities would I embrace, if there were no restrictions?
- What do I need to do to prepare myself for the right opportunity?
- Who do I need to involve?
